AU204: Determination of Inorganic Cations and Ammonium in Environmental Waters Using a Compact Ion Chromatography System

Instrument Type: IC

This Application Update revises AN141 using the compact, integrated Dionex Integrion HPIC system with a Dionex IonPac CS16-4μm cation-exchange column. Inorganic cations and ammonium in environmental waters are determined using a 4 μm particle 4 mm i.d. cation-exchange column to shorten analysis time.

Determination of Inorganic Cations and Ammonium in Environmental Waters by Ion Chromatography Using the Dionex IonPac CS16 Column with a Compact Ion Chromatography System

Instrument Type: IC

This record describes the use of IC with a 5 mm i.d. Dionex IonPac CS16 cation-exchange column, an electrolytically generated methanesulfonic acid (MSA) eluent, and suppressed conductivity detection to determine dissolved alkali and alkaline earth cations and ammonium in municipal wastewater as published in Application Note 141. In this record the method was executed on an Integrion ion chromatography system.

IC Assay for Lithium, Sodium, and Calcium in Lithium Carbonate Using a Compact Ion Chromatography System

Instrument Type: IC

Lithium carbonate is used to treat a number of mental health problems associated with chemical imbalance in the brain. Sodium and calcium are possible cationic impurities in lithium carbonate preparations. This record shows a method that uses a Thermo Scientific Dionex IonPac CS16 cation-exchange column, an electrolytically generated MSA eluent, and suppressed conductivity detection to determine lithium, sodium, and calcium in lithium carbonate that was published in Application Note 1090. In this record the method is executed using an Integrion ion chromatography system.

Determination of Ammonia in Sodium Bicarbonate Using a Compact Ion Chromatography System

Instrument Type: IC

One of the main pharmaceutical uses of sodium bicarbonate is for hemodialysis. For hemodialysis-grade sodium bicarbonate, the quality and purity requirements are stringent. Ammonia is one of the impurities that is assayed in sodium bicarbonate because the presence of elevated levels of ammonia in the blood stream can have adverse effects. This record describes an ion chromatography (IC)-based method for the determination of ammonia (as ammonium) in sodium bicarbonate that was published in Application Note 1073. In this record the method was executed using an Integrion IC system.

AN1144: Ion Chromatography Assay for Lithium in Lithium Hydroxide

Instrument Type: IC

The IC-based method described in this application note uses a Thermo Scientific Dionex IonPac CS16 cation-exchange column, an electrolytically generated MSA eluent, and suppressed conductivity detection to determine lithium in lithium hydroxide. The method proposed in this application note was validated following the guidelines outlined in USP General Chapter <1225>, Validation of Compendial Procedures to meet the requirements for lithium and calcium quantification prescribed in the lithium hydroxide USP monograph. An ICS-6000 can be used for this application.
