AN1142: Determination of Aluminum in OTC Pharmaceutical Products

Instrument Type: IC

Aluminum-containing compounds are used extensively in cosmetics, prescription pharmaceuticals, and OTC drug products. In this application note, we report the validation of an IC method for the determination of aluminum in OTC formulations using a Dionex IonPac CS10 analytical column and postcolumn derivatization with Tiron, followed by UV absorbance detection at 310 nm. The method was evaluated in terms of linearity, precision, accuracy, ruggedness, and limit of quantitation for aluminum. The method was evaluated with antacids and deodorants. An ICS-6000 can be used for this application.

AN69: Determination of Aluminum in Complex Matrices Using Chelation Ion Chromatography

Instrument Type: IC

Determination of trace metals in complex matrices has been a difficult analytical challenge. This application note describes the extension of Chelation ion chromatography for the analytical determination of aluminum in complex matrices. This technique allows aluminum to be preconcentrated from matrices high in salts, acids, or bases. Following selective concentration, aluminum is eluted to a conventional cation exchange column for separation from other transition metals. Selective detection is accomplished using post-column derivatization with Tiron and subsequent UV detection at 310 nm.

AN206: Determination of Oxalate and Other Anions in Bayer Liquor Using Ion Chromatography

Instrument Type: IC

A direct injection method was designed using a Reagent‑Free™ Ion Chromatography (RFIC™) system with in-line sample cleanup to accurately and reproducibly measure oxalate in Bayer liquor. The online sample preparation removes most of the aluminum so that it does not contaminate either the column or suppressor. Fluoride is used to promote ligand exchange with oxalate for aluminum. This online sample preparation method allows an accurate, reproducible, and rugged determination of oxalate in Bayer liquor.
