Determination of Ammonia in Sodium Bicarbonate Using a Compact Ion Chromatography System
Instrument Type: ICOne of the main pharmaceutical uses of sodium bicarbonate is for hemodialysis. For hemodialysis-grade sodium bicarbonate, the quality and purity requirements are stringent. Ammonia is one of the impurities that is assayed in sodium bicarbonate because the presence of elevated levels of ammonia in the blood stream can have adverse effects. This record describes an ion chromatography (IC)-based method for the determination of ammonia (as ammonium) in sodium bicarbonate that was published in Application Note 1073. In this record the method was executed using an Integrion IC system.
AN1073: Determination of Ammonia in Sodium Bicarbonate
Instrument Type: ICThis study describes an ion chromatography (IC)-based method for the determination of ammonia (as ammonium) in sodium bicarbonate. The method performance characteristics—linearity, precision, accuracy, ruggedness, and the limits of detection (LODs) and quantitation (LOQs)—were measured according to the requirements described in the USP General Chapter <1225> guidelines. The automation features such as the electrolytically generated mobile phase and self-regenerating suppressor contribute to the robustness and sensitivity of this method.
