AN86: Determination of Trace Cations in Power Plant Waters Containing Morpholine (Method 2)

Instrument Type: IC

Morpholine and ammonium are used as additives in power plant waters. Morpholine acts as a corrosion inhibitor, whereas ammonium is used to control pH. In this matrix, it is critical to determine the presence of inorganic cation contaminants. This method uses the IonPac CS14 column to quantify trace concentrations of lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium in the presence of high levels of ammonium and morpholine. Acetonitrile can be added to the eluent to improve peak shape and optimize resolution for some of the cations of interest.

AN246: Determination of Diethylene Glycol in a Sorbitol Solution

Instrument Type: IC

Glycerin, sorbitol, and propylene glycol (PG) are widely used in pharmaceuticals and personal care products. These products are at risk from adulteration by similar, less costly, and very toxic compounds (ethylene glycol (EG) and diethylene glycol (DG)). The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) as directed by the US FDA revised USP 32 NF 26–27 monographs to identify and quantify EG and DEG in PG, sorbitol, and glycerin solutions. Here DEG in sorbitol solution is determined by IC-PAD with Pt working electrode. An ICS-6000 can be used for this application.

AN148: Determination of Bethanechol by Ion Chromatography.

Instrument Type: IC

Bethanechol chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound that is structurally and pharmacologically related to acetylcholine. A method in the USP 24 NF 19 recently proposed that the gravimetric assay for bethanechol chloride be replaced with a more specific and rugged ion chromatography assay. The proposed method specifies the use of a Dionex IonPac CS14 separator column using methanesulfonic acid (MSA) eluent and suppressed conductivity detection. Here, we applied electrolytic on-line generation of MSA to optimize reproducibility, convenience, and method transfer between laboratories.
