AN72349: Determination of Chlorine, Bromine, and Sulfur in Polyethylene Materials using Combustion Ion Chromatography

Instrument Type: IC

Plastic samples can be very difficult to analyze as sample preparation is required to extract analytes or remove interfering matrices, and these sample preparation techniques can be labor intensive. In this application note, we demonstrate that a CIC system can be used for automated qualitative and quantitative analysis of halogens and sulfur in plastic samples. Four plastic samples were analyzed for their chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), and sulfur (S) content. Method accuracy was evaluated using a polymer certified reference material (ERM EC680k) for Cl,Br, and S.

Determination of Halogens and Sulfur in a Polyethylene Standard Reference Material by Combustion Ion Chromatography

Instrument Type: IC

Polyethylene (PE) is widely used for containers, packaging material, etc. Because halogen compounds are often used as additives, it is important to know the halogen content when disposing or recycling PE products. By using a combustion ion chromatography (CIC) system consisting of the automatic quick furnace AQF-2100H and an ICS-1600 ion chromatograph, the concentrations of halogens and sulfur can be determined accurately and quickly.
