SAGD is used for the extraction of hydrocarbons from oil sands. Recovered process water is treated to reduce ion content prior to reuse in steam generation. In this Application Note, water samples obtained from SAGD oil sands processing were analyzed using a Thermo Scientific Dionex ICS-5000+ Reagent-Free High-Pressure Ion Chromatography (HPIC) system for cation determinations using Thermo Scientific Dionex IonPac CS16 capillary column. An ICS-6000 can be used for this application.
